Resistance, Rights and Refuge
Britain and Chile 50 Years After the Chilean Coup
Conference 20-22 October 2023
In October 2023, solidarity activists, exiles, human rights campaigners, academics, archivists, museum curators and students met at LSE to reflect on the impact of the Chilean coup in Britain, the wide-ranging mobilisation against the dictatorship that followed, the support for Chileans arriving a refugees in the UK and the contribution that Chileans have made ever since to British society. The conference was sponsored by the LSE’s Department of International History, its Americas and the World and the Modern World History Research Clusters and the Cold War Studies Programme. It combined academic panels, witness panels, and keynotes from Grace Livingstone, on the influence Chilean events on British foreign policy, and Cath Collins and Francisco Bustos, on the ongoing struggle for justice in Chile today. It closed with music from Quimantu, including a beautiful rendition of Violeta Parra’s La jardinera. Our thanks to everyone who took part and to the wonderful feedback we received. A full programme and supporting documents from the conference can be accessed here. To share your insights or memories, please get in touch by emailing chile50lse@gmail.com.
Art, Resistance and Rights for the 21st Century
A Conversation and Workshop with LASTESIS
LSE, 14-18 November 2023
To reflect on the legacies of the coup in Chile and the ongoing struggle for rights and resistance, we were thrilled to welcome the interdisciplinary collective, LASTESIS to LSE in November to talk about their latest work and the significance that art can play in building resistance to injustice. On 18 November, they also ran a participatory workshop at the LSE Library on Feminist Resistance and interdisciplinary strategies for performance.
